Description

Imagining the Lectionary:
The hiddenness of God's ceaseless Kingdom activity is a sight for sore eyes (Proper 6B)

He also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.  All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.”  (Mark 4:26-30)

The regular arrangement of row upon row of newly germinated plants is evidence that the seeds were not sown randomly or carelessly. This pattern has not arisen by chance; the evenly spaced green lines stretching away across the field demonstrate the prior existence of a definite method and purpose to the planting. What we see is what was meant to be. The unfolding Kingdom of God is made up of countless successive, purposeful, life-enhancing acts of love which taken together disclose the pattern of God's intention and activity amongst us. The
Spirit of God sows seeds of intention and invitation below the surface of our thoughts in the warm earth of our humanity. God yearns for and desires that we respond positively so that the Kingdom would break through continually in us. The God of pattern and possibility works in real time to call forth transformation through the generative power of abundant grace.
