Weaving the Tapestry of Moral Judgement: Christian Ethics in a Plural World

Weaving the Tapestry of Moral Judgement is a new, accessible and challenging introduction to Christian Ethics.  The author invites readers to consider what informs the moral and ethical choices and decisions we make  and what kind of people we seek to be and become.

He introduces a number of different approaches to making moral decisions and judgements, from different secular and Christian perspectives which he sees as being in a creative dialogue rather than as clashing tectonic plates.

Harrod argues that we make moral decisions first and foremost as human beings and do so in a context that is shaped by factors such as different philosophical traditions and other world religions.

Weaving the Tapestry of Moral Judgement is not a text book in the sense of simply surveying impartially the literature, the history of debate, and the various options available for discussion.  It argues its own case too much for that, whilst also leaving many issues unresolved and allows readers to become competent and confident in participating in the challenges of moral decisions making in a plural world.

In the first part of the book, the author introduces different approaches to engaging with moral and ethical questions.  In the second part, a number of specific issues such as war and peace, assisted death and human sexuality are discussion.

John Harrod is Principle of Hartley Victoria College within the Partnership for Theological Education in Manchester.
