Introduction

Evangelical Christianity is the fastest growing section of the Christian Church in the world today, spreading rapidly in Africa, South America, China and beyond; no longer is it the religion of white, middle class westerners and their converts in the colonies. Christopher Catherwood examines the historical roots of evangelicalism, its doctrinal distinctives and the social and political implications that flow from them. Together with an overview of the strength of evangelicalism in different countries and continents he shows that the Christian faith, and especially its evangelical expression, has broken free from its colonial and western past to become a truly global player in the 21st Century.
