WAITING – ADVENT

By Stuart Kerner

Suitable for Whole School

Aim
To introduce Advent as a time of waiting and preparation.

Preparation and materials
None required.

Assembly
1. Begin by standing in front of your audience. Look as though you are about to say something, then abruptly stop, look flustered and tell them to hang on. Leave the assembly hall for a moment (any longer may make it difficult to regain their attention), then return to the front. Again, look as though you are about to start, stop, tell them to hang on again, pause, look around and then finally say: Don’t
you hate being kept waiting?
2. For Christians this is the season of Advent – the beginning of the Christian year. It is a time for waiting patiently. It is a reminder to get ready for the ‘advent’ or coming of Jesus Christ. It isn’t just a reminder to start buying cards and presents, or make the Christmas cake, or even think about Jesus’ first coming at Christmas. Advent reminds us that Jesus is coming again. The first Christians expected Jesus to come back at any time. Centuries have passed but Jesus’ promise to return still stands firm...
