USING OUR TALENTS WISELY

At the beginning of the twentieth century, a man was caught by the police for forging a five pound note and attempting to deposit it in the bank. The deception was discovered by the cashier who, as she took the note from him, felt that there was something sticky on her fingers. It was this that led her to tell the police that the five pound note might not be genuine.
The police caught the man as he was standing in his attic in front of his easel, in the very act of counterfeiting another five pound note. Unusually the man counterfeited his five pound notes, not through printing, but by painting them. The man was so talented in the art of painting that he could paint a note that was indistinguishable from the real thing.
He had been committing forgery in this way for some time. The reason he had got caught that day was that he had grown impatient and hadn’t waited for the paint to get properly dry.
In that attic, police also found three fantastic paintings that the man had painted. The proof of how talented an artist he was lies in the fact that each of the three paintings was later sold for five hundred pounds, which was a lot of money in
those days.
Now we could say, ‘Oh, well! The man was lazy. He wanted easy money. This is what he did for a quick buck.’ And yet it took him the same amount of time to paint a five pound note as it took him to paint a five hundred pound painting! The man had a talent, he worked hard, but he did not know how to put his talent to good use.

It is important to remember that our talents are only as good as the use we make of them. Impatience and lack of commitment can result in their being wasted.
