By Stuart Kerner

Suitable for Key Stage Three

Aim
To consider how even the smallest of us can have a big effect on the world around us.

Preparation and materials
• You might like to buy some ‘Magic Flyer’ butterflies from your local greetings card shop. Before the assembly, wind them up and place them inside a notebook. When you open the book and genuine looking butterflies magically fly out, the effect is very impressive.

Assembly
1. Begin by saying you are thinking of a powerful creature that can cause untold harm and destruction to many. Ask your audience if they can guess which member of the animal kingdom you are thinking of. The chances are they will respond with ‘a lion’, ‘a shark’ or some similar man-eating animal.
2. If you have the ‘Magic Flyer’ butterflies primed, open your notebook now to release them, saying that perhaps this will give the audience a clue about which creature you’re thinking of. Hopefully someone will now suggest a butterfly.
3. Comment that to say that such a beautiful and delicate thing as a butterfly could bring death and destruction sounds absurd but, according to a scientific theory called the ‘butterfly effect’, that is exactly what, potentially, it can do...
