Poem about a chapel converted into a carpet warehouse
Meditation: On the conversion of a chapel
Luke 21:1-9
Many chapels that were closed in the 20th century were converted for other use,
carpet warehouses being a favourite. But their influence remained.
The glory of the Lord had departed from our chapel.
Rolls of carpet stand where once the mighty organ pipes
Rehearsed the angels’ song.
Rolls of carpet, of different widths and colours,
Lie close together where once church members sat,
Never touching.
Rolls of carpet of differing qualities
Stand upright in the pulpit,
Waiting for their design to be revealed.
The glory of the Lord has departed from our chapel.
